Democrat Gloria Romero Roses, a Colombian-born businesswoman from Southwest Ranches, will run for Congress against Republican U.S. Rep. David Rivera, the Florida Democratic Party said Monday.
The announcement comes a week after Miami state Rep. Luis Garcia quit the congressional race after accusing national Democrats of betraying him by recruiting other candidates for the seat. Garcia is now running for Miami-Dade County Commission.
The party initially tried to recruit former Miami-Dade Mayor Alex Penelas to run instead of Garcia. Once it became clear that Penelas was leaning against a campaign, Democrats looked elsewhere including to Roses, a political newcomer who has never run for office before.

Democrats view the Cuban-American Rivera as vulnerable, dogged by state and federal investigations into his personal and campaign finances. Though the state probe against Rivera has stalled, his reelection campaign fundraising for has been lackluster. And he is running in a newly redrawn swing seat, Congressional District 26, which stretches from Southwest Miami-Dade to Key West.
