Over 80 People Arrested In Colombia's National Strike

BOGOTA, Aug 22 (BERNAMA-NNN-PRENSA LATINA) -- Over 80 people have been arrested by the security forces in the agrarian and popular national strike in Colombia, which holds about 20 roads blocked in 10 departments.

In a statement to the media, General Rodolfo Palomino, recently appointed Police Director, said that 14 people were arrested in Ubate and Cundinamarca for blocking roads and another eight people were wounded.

A day before the strike, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos ordered the security forces to act forcefully against those who obstructed the roads.

Protesters denounced the constant repression of anti-riot police (Esmad) and the lack of guarantees for exercising their right to protest.
