Jaime Carrasco recalled how he was abducted from his home in Chile just after General Augusto Pinochet had taken over the government in a military coup on Sept. 11, 1973.

"On Oct, 2, the military forces came into my home and took me to a military barrack where I was submitted to a different type of abuse -- torture, electricity, beating, blindfolded, and so forth," Carrasco said Monday.

Carrasco was held prisoner for three months, and eventually made his way to Winnipeg in 1974.

Pinochet ruled as a dictator for 17 years, but Chile has since returned to a democratic government. The local Chilean community, however, does not want to forget so it is commemorating the 40th anniversary of that military coup this month, calling it 'Nuncas Mas,' or 'Nevermore.'

Thousands of Chileans like Carrasco were detained, tortured, executed or made to disappear during Pinochet's reign.
