Chile Extradites Argentina Judge on Rights Charges

Chile Extradites Argentina Judge on Rights Charges
SANTIAGO, Chile September 5, 2013 (AP)

Chile is extraditing an Argentine judge who fled his home country to avoid trial on charges of crimes against humanity.

Interpol Chile director Fernando Villegas says police took former judge Otilio Romano to Santiago's airport Wednesday night. He is now under custody of Argentine Interpol agents and will be flown to the Argentine city of Mendoza.

Romano is accused of committing almost 100 human rights crimes while working as a prosecutor during Argentina's 1976-83 military dictatorship.

Romano fled to Chile in August 2011. Chile refused to grant him political asylum last year and he was placed under house arrest pending the extradition process.
