Rousseff's popularity rebounding from post-protest slump

BRASILIA: Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff's approval ratings are recovering from a wave of popular discontent in June and she has broadened her lead over other possible contenders in next year's election, a poll published on Tuesday showed.

But her negative numbers remain high enough to force a run-off vote that could complicate a re-election bid.

The number of Brazilians who approve of her government's performance rose to 38.1 percent at the start of this month from 31.3 percent in July, according to the poll commissioned by private transport sector lobby CNT and done by MDA Pesquisa.

Those who disapprove of the government's performance dropped to 21.9 percent from 29.5 percent in July, the survey said.

Rousseff's personal approval rating, which was in the high 70's before massive street protests shook Brazil in June, recovered to 58.0 percent from 49.3 percent in July.

...because, it appeared to me, from the scanty news we get here about anything in Latin America (thank Gawd for DU!), that Rousseff was RESPONDING to the protests in democratic and productive ways. That is, of course, what elected officials are supposed to do in a democracy (and what we almost never see here any more--if "the people" want it, it is royally IGNORED). It also occurred to me-and I think it's true--that Rouseff welcomed the protests and that they helped her politically, as to enacting measures that she wanted to enact but that Brazil's rightwing/corporate class were preventing.

Here's hoping she has a full political recovery. She is a good 'un!
