Brazilian rancher convicted over murder of US nun Dorothy Stang

A Brazilian court has convicted a rancher for ordering the murder of an American nun over a land dispute - a case that caused international outrage.

It is the third time Vitalmiro Bastos Moura has been tried for Dorothy Stang's 2005 death after previous convictions were overturned.

Ms Stang, 73, campaigned for 30 years to save rainforest from the interests of wealthy landlords.

She had tried to block Moura's attempts to seize land and was shot six times.

It had seemed all was really lost when he was released the last time.

Shocking to hear this has happened. Hope so deeply this will be the last word.

Almost as hideous as hiring the two assassins was Vitalmiro Moura's hate campaign against Dorothy Strang before they even killed her. The result was other local landowners also reviled and despised this truly excellent rights worker to the point they were referring to her as a "witch" and far worse. They used that old U.S. American Southern hatred routine directed at people who worked to overcome racism, the hate climate that surrounded civil rights atrocities during that long struggle.

He was very wealthy already, but Dorothy, in his view, threatened to prevent his next acquisition, so he paid two desperately poor, amoral men to ride up on horses, apprehend her in the forest, and drop her where she stood with her little Bible. There is a photo in google images of the fallen body of this heroic, truly good person if you search for "Dorothy Strang." You will grasp even more the ugliness of this truly filthy crime.

Thank you, Muriel volestrangler.
