Maria and Teresa Tapia, the conjoined twins surgically separated in November by doctors at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU, continue to do well, said the surgeon who led the medical team.
"They look great. It's more difficult to tell them apart because Maria is catching up to Teresa with her weight," said Dr. David Lanning, who saw the girls this week when he traveled to the Dominican Republic, the twins' home country, to accept a humanitarian award.
"Maria, if you remember, she was on pancreatic enzyme supplements. Those have been tapered off. They both are still on half a baby aspirin a day, but that will stop in about eight or nine months," said Lanning, surgeon-in-chief at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU.
Born in April 2010, the twins were attached at the lower chest and abdomen.
Richmond-based World Pediatric Project, a child health and medical philanthropy that does medical missions in the Caribbean, brought the girls to the U.S. for evaluation and later for the marathon separation surgery.
