MANAGUA – A Nicaraguan navy vessel rescued five people on board a Colombian-flagged fishing boat that had run out of fuel and gone adrift in the Caribbean Sea, the Nicaraguan military announced Thursday.

The rescue occurred at 6 p.m. Tuesday 20 nautical miles (36 km) from Corn Island, in Nicaraguan waters, according to the official statement.

The fishing vessel had set sail on Monday from the Caribbean port of Bocas del Toro, in northwestern Panama.

The Nicaraguan navy coordinated with the Nicaraguan-flagged fishing vessel La Capitana 1 to tow the Colombian craft, the Delta 1, to Corn Island with its four crewmembers, one passenger and 20,000 pounds of fish.

After being supplied with fuel, the Colombian vessel departed for Colombia’s San Andres archipelago at 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to the report.
