A resident gestures during a protest against the death of a man in Pavao-Pavaozinho slum, in the Copacabana neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday. Residents have accused Police Peacekeeping Unit (UPP) officers of causing the death of Douglas Rafael da Silva Pereira, 25, who was found dead inside a school nearby, according to local media.

Pereira was a well-known figure in the community, and a dancer on a television show featured on Brazil's largest channel.

Intense exchanges of gunfire were heard after police moved into the slum, the Associated Press reported, in an area only a few hundred yards from where Olympic swimming events are set to take place during the Rio 2016 Olympics.
