FARC drug agreement important step towards peace, security, and progress for Colombia: European Union
May 19, 2014 posted by Flora Baker
The European Union (EU) extended its support for the latest agreement to emerge from ongoing peace talks between the Colombian government and the FARC rebel, the countrys largest, in a statement released Monday. group to dismantle the drug economy in Colombia.
The EUs vote of confidence came after US Secretary of State John Kerry issued a similar statement praising the deal, which adresses the issue of drug cultivation and trafficking, the third of six items on the negotiation agenda. As part of the deal, the FARC reportedly agreed to end any relationship with illicit drugs the group currently maintains.
The drugs trade has weakened political and social structures in Colombia for too long, fueled insecurity, and caused suffering, said the European External Action Service (EEAS). We are encouraged by the clear rejection of all links to it and by the common determination to fight it in all its dimensions. Dismantling the drugs economy will benefit the entire region and enable Colombia to reap the full advantages of peace and security.
According to the statement, The EU continues to support the Havana peace talks and strongly encourages the parties to continue discussions on the two remaining chapters in the same constructive spirit, with a view of reaching an early overall agreement to ensure stable and sustainable peace for the Colombian people.

(24,010 posts)...so, what is probably in the works here is a carving up of territories for the legal production of marijuana and the coca leaf, at least, maybe also opium (don't know about cocaine), with U.S. "free trade for the rich" regions given over to Big Pharma/Big Ag, as they implement their Big Plan to take over and monopolize (and probably GMO-ize) formerly illegal herbal, medicinal, recreational or addictive drugs, on the one hand, and socialist regions, run by the demobilized, politicized FARC, also growing and dispensing formerly illegal drugs, but handling the profits differently (along socialist lines-more benefits to the poor). This will probably cut out the rightwing drug gangs/death squads that support Alvaro Uribe, which is probably why Uribe hates Santos and opposes decriminalization (and opposes the peace talks).
It seems silly to quibble over the language in this article describing what the FARC has agreed to. For one thing, we don't know that the FARC used the words "currently maintains." But mainly, what we are seeing in the Havana talks is the Left and the Right coming together and leaving the Far Right out of it. This is a very important development.
It's my GUESS that the underlying agenda of the talks is the dibbying up of territories for the near-future legalization of drugs. But I think it's a very good guess. It may be one reason why Jose Mujica, president of Uruguay, was recently called into the peace talks. Mujica just oversaw the legalization of marijuana in Uruguay, to be regulated by the state.
