Ecuador's president backs indefinite re-elections, coy about his plans

Ecuador's President Rafael Correa on Saturday backed a constitutional change to allow politicians to run indefinitely, potentially paving the way for the leftist himself to seek the top job again in 2017.

Correa remained coy about his future plans, stressing that a potential run depended on his party and political conditions.

"Let the Ecuadorean people decide with full freedom the continuity or change of leaders," Correa told Congress on Saturday. "We have to keep adjusting our institutions to (Ecuador's) new reality and not revert to the domination of elites."

The measure is poised to easily be approved in Congress, where Correa's Alianza Pais party has a majority.

On negative things he has done? Ecuador is growing rapidly (without USAID, thank you very much) and is an increasingly popular retirement destination for north americans.

If he had any notion of democracy, he would hand over the torch to someone else, even if he is enjoying a popularity over 50%

any of the media that even midly disagree with him. He had passed a journalistic 'responsibility law' that criminalizes print dissent. In addition, this latest ploy to become President for Life is a carbon copy of Chavez's.

Jesus, and the chavistas here have the gall to claim Uribe is anti democratic when he could've easily convinced the Colombians to reelect him for a third term back when he was enjoying the height of his popularity but decided not to and stick to the constitution. But then they sure as hell don't talk about the "leftist" leaders in the region (if they can even be called "leftist&quot trying to perpetuate themselves in power.
