The gist is, the US requested the Netherlands to extradite Carvajal based on the fact that he was solicited for having given "material assistance" to FARC terrorists. Carvajal was named consul general for Aruba last January.
The corruption of the Chavista regime just keeps getting more and more exposure. I wonder what kind of juicy information they'll get out of Cavajal when he's extradited to the US.

(2,035 posts)Supposedly the DEA has had dirt on him for a while now. And now when Carvajal is on foreign soil that's allied with the US, they were finally able to request his arrest. It's a tad weird, though. Didn't the regime fully know that Carvajal was requested by the DEA? Did they send him to Aruba with this previous knowledge in mind? Maybe it's they're way of trying to clean up their gabinet... Or maybe Maduro knows Carvajal is a close associate to Diosdado Cabello and is probably trying to get rid of him by incriminating him through third-party figures.

(2,035 posts)Maybe they'll offer him a deal, perhaps a reduced sentence if he confesses which other Chavista big-heads are involved in similar drug-trafficking/money laundering activities. A lot of people in the PSUV must be biting their nails hard right now.

(2,035 posts)Hugo Carvajal, a retired general who was a confidant to Venezuela's late President Hugo Chávez, was detained at the request of U.S. officials when he arrived Wednesday night at Aruba's airport. He was slated to become Venezuela's consular general on the island, which is part of the Netherlands.
Venezuela blasted the arrest and demanded his immediate release, arguing Mr. Carvajal enjoyed diplomatic immunity that protected him from arrest in Aruba. But the judge at his initial hearing sided with Aruban prosecutors who pointed out that Mr. Carvajal was yet to be officially recognized by Aruba or the Netherlands as the Venezuela's consular general, and as such held no special diplomatic privileges. Mr. Carvajal has denied U.S. accusations of wrongdoing.
I guess the next nation to temporarily break diplomatic ties with will be the Netherlands.
