Uruguay fears for Venezuela democracy

http://www.buenosairesherald.com/article/186122/uruguay-fears-for-venezuela-democracy

MONTEVIDEO — Uruguayan Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa said yesterday that his country is “very concerned” about the current political crisis in Venezuela. He pointed out that alleged cases of torture, the way in which some political opponents have been imprisoned and the repression of protests with use of firearms are Uruguay’s main worries.

Nin Novoa, a centrist, said Uruguay has still not received any information about what is happening to political prisoners in Venezuela.

In an interview he also said that through the Unasur his government had asked President Nicolás Maduro’s government to allow the Red Cross to prepare a report on the issue.

“Some Venezuelans are living in the same conditions as many Uruguayans did 30 years ago,” Nin said in a radio interview, making a shocking, clear reference to the last Uruguayan dictatorship that began in 1973.
