Bogota is 12,000 policemen short: Mayor
posted by Alice Bradshaw-Smith

Bogota has a deficit of 12,000 policemen, the mayor of Colombia’s capital city said Monday.

Mayor Gustavo Petro said that the city requires a total of 30,000 uniformed policemen; a far higher number than the existent 18,000.

Colombia’s capital has nearly 8 million inhabitants, meaning that for every 100,000 inhabitants, there are 225 policemen. In New York City, for example, there are 417 cops per 100,000 inhabitants.

Petro is looking to have 375 policemen per 100,000 inhabitants.
