Guatemalan woman, son die after being pulled from Yuma canal

May 15, 2015 4:51 pm

YUMA, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say the bodies of a Guatemalan woman and her 2-year-old son have been pulled out of a canal in Yuma.

Yuma County Sheriff's officials were called to the Salinity Canal about a drowning around 1 a.m. Friday.

U.S. Border Patrol agents had located shoe impressions leading west into the canal, but couldn't find any on the opposite side.

They began to search the area and discovered the bodies.

The agents attempted to resuscitate the 25-year-old woman and her son until paramedics arrived.

Both were transported to a Yuma hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
