Expert Calls OAS Ruling in Venezuela Media Case a 'Perversion' of Human Rights Law

Venezuela decided not to renew the TV channel's license in 2007 after RCTV repeatedly broke the law, including providing open support for a 2002 short lived coup
The Inter-American Human Rights Court overstepped its jurisdiction by ordering Venezuela to reissue a broadcast license to the private RCTV media outlet, which could set a dangerous precedent, according to Venezuelan media analyst Luis Britto Garcia.
The Inter-American Human Rights Court, which forms part of the Organization of American States human rights system in the hemisphere, published Monday its sentence that found that Venezuela had violated freedom of expression, when it decided not to renew the over-the-air broadcast license of RCTV.
In its ruling, the court argues that victims of the alleged violation of freedom of expression were the owners and employees of RCTV, something Britto implies might give other companies license to be creative with their complaints.
If a company does poorly, are they going to go complain to a human rights court? That is a perversion of the true doctrine of human rights," Britto told Aporrea in an interview Wednesday.
