The Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Chile "issues interventionist judgments" in a communiqué its foreign office aired on Sunday, September 12, calling for respect for the human rights of Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo López, understanding, and the holding of the parliament vote on December 6.
In reply to the statement issued by President Michelle Bachelet's government, the Venezuelan foreign office issued a communiqué reminding Chile that non-intervention in the internal affairs of another State is a principle enshrined in international law.
In the communiqué, Venezuela urged Chile to "maintain a respectful relation and to avoid meddling in internal affairs."
Costa Rica and Paraguay also voice concern
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica also reacted "with concern" over the conviction of Leopoldo López, who was sentenced on September 10 to 13 years, nine months, and seven days of imprisonment for "public incitement, criminal association, property damages, and arson" during anti-government protests staged last year in Venezuela.
