The journalist’s supporters contend he is a victim of “political persecution.”

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court in the Honduras capital of Tegucigalpa Wednesday in support of David Romero Ellner—a journalist recently found guilty of libel and defamation after he broke one of the country's biggest corruption scandals.

Romero, a journalist and director of Radio and Globo TV, arrived at the high court Wednesday for a hearing to determine his sentencing after he was convicted in November on six counts of defamation and slander.

However, the court decided to delay sentencing until Feb. 9 and Romero was released, after which time he walked through the streets with the crowd of cheering supporters.

Over 500 extra police and military officers were stationed in front of the Supreme Court, as people from all over the country gathered outside to support the journalist.
