Colombia: Peace in jeopardy as rebel boss killed

Colombia: Peace in jeopardy as rebel boss killed

COLOMBIAN President Juan Manuel Santos confirmed on Saturday that a rebel leader had been killed by troops — days after two guerillas were shot dead in an ambush.

Mr Santos said the army had launched an offensive against the National Liberation Army (ELN) in western Choco state, “neutralising” the front leader known by the alias “Pastuso.”

The killings could jeopardise peace talks with the ELN and the revised peace accord with communist rebel group the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc).

On Friday the Prensa Rural paper reported that two Farc guerillas killed earlier last week were shot by a sniper in an ambush.

(Who benefits from this new violence? The Colombian wildly corrupt hard-right, pro-war military and oligarchy which has been benefiting from the 50+ year old war all these long years. It's their gravy train.)
