Bogota Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos mourned Saturday the death of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who he said acknowledged at the end of his days "that armed struggle was not the way" and "he helped put an end to the Colombian conflict."

"We mourn the death of Fidel Castro. We are close to his brother Raul and his family at this time. Our solidarity with the Cuban people," Santos said on his Twitter account.

The Colombian president added that Fidel Castro "acknowledged at the end of his days that armed struggle was not the way. He then helped put an end to the Colombian conflict."

It was in Havana where peace talks took place over a period of four years between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, and which led to the signing of a new peace accord last Thursday, Nov. 24, which awaits the approval next week by the Colombian legislature.
