OAS Demands Argentina's Macri Release Indigenous Prisoner
Published 30 November 2016
The Organization of America States, or OAS, has called on Argentine President Mauricio Macri to release Milagro Sala, a prominent Indigenous activist and lawmaker who has been imprisoned during his term.
Luis Almagro, secretary-general of the OAS, sent a letter Tuesday addressed to Sala demanding her "immediate release." She will have been imprisoned for a year in January.
Almagro said he shared his concern with "the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention of the United Nations, and other known international organizations."

The U.N. requested in October that the government of Mauricio Macri immediately releases Indigenous activist Milagro Sala. The lawmaker was arrested in Jujuy on Jan. 16 after staging a month-long sit-in against Jujuy governor Gerardo Morales, an ally of President Macri.
