Support Builds in Paraguay for Lugo's 2018 Presidential Bid

. . .

The leftist Guasu Front party confirmed Monday that it would support a constitutional amendment that would allow Fernando Lugo to stand for the 2018 presidential elections in Paraguay.

“Guasa Front takes a firm position in supporting a constitutional amendment as the most democratic path to introduce Lugo for re-election,” the political party said in a press release.

The party also announced via Facebook that it would “make preparations” to mobilize support to present the proposal for a constitutional amendment.

Lugo, leader of the Guasu Front political alliance, served as Paraguay's president from 2008 until June 22, 2012, advocating for the poor and marginalized, when his tenure was cut short in what most leaders in the region branded a right-wing "parliamentary coup," much like what occurred in Brazil against Workers' Party President Dilma Rousseff in August 2016.
