Former President Martinelli Tries to Avoid his Extradition to Panama
Panama, Sep 3 (Prensa Latina) In a last-minute reaction, the defense of former Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli asked the US South District Court of Florida to extend the extradition of the accused for 30 days, it was reported here today.
The lawyers intend at that time to prepare and file a apply for an habeas corpus before the Eleventh Circuit of the Court of Appeals of Atlanta, against the decision of the Floridian judge, who sustained the existence of a probable cause for the accused to face justice in Panama , reported the newspaper La Estrella.
In case the judge had already issued the extradition certificate, lawyers asked Judge Edwin Torres to suspend the order that should follow the ruling issued on Thursday, August 31, and place him in custody of the State Department, which takes the final decision.
The petition is presented in good faith and does not intended to cause unnecessary delays, clarified the lawyers in their plea, who remember that, otherwise, the defendant would not have the opportunity to write the petition that assists him in law before the order of the Court, noted the source.
