Journalist killed in Mexico's Gulf coast state of Veracruz

VERACRUZ, Mexico (AP) — Mexican police said Thursday a journalist who ran a local news website was shot to death in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz.

State police said Leobardo Vazquez was found dead late Wednesday in the town of Gutierrez Zamora, which is located in an area known for drug cartel activity.

Ivonne Hernandez Duran, Vazquez's wife, said she heard shots and found her husband lying near a taco stand he operated out of his home.

Vazquez previously worked for other outlets, but was most recently managing the news site Enlace Informativo Regional.

1. Mexican journalist gunned down in violent Veracruz state

A Mexican journalist has been killed in the eastern state of Veracruz, one of the world’s most dangerous places for journalists. It was the third murder of a journalist in Mexico this year.

Mexican police said local journalist Leobardo Vazquez was gunned down at his home Wednesday night in the municipality of Gutierrez Zamora.

Vazquez previously worked for other media outlets, but in 2017 was the editor of Enlace Informativo Regional, a Facebook page covering local news.

Men on motorcycles shot and killed him in front of his house, where he also sold tacos. Many Mexican journalists work second jobs to get by.

Veracruz is the most dangerous place for journalists in Mexico. Twenty-two journalists have been killed in the state since 2000.
