Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mexico’s first leftist president in seven decades, has been sworn in with a promise to abolish free-market policies and transform Latin America’s second-biggest economy.

The 65-year-old former Mexico City mayor and left-wing nationalist, known by his initials Amlo, attacked neo-liberalism and vowed to help the poor in a nation where almost half the population lives in poverty.

He won a landslide victory in July – his third presidential bid – to overturn a deeply entrenched political establishment. He said the victory marked a change not just in government but of an entire political regime.

Guests this weekend have included Jeremy Corbyn, who was welcome to Mexico as a guest of honour with Mr López Obrador inviting him to his ranch to spend the eve of his inauguration together and reportedly praising him as “my eternal friend”.
