BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Peronist candidate Alberto Fernandez was seen leading President Mauricio Macri as polls closed in Argentina’s primary election on Sunday, according to Argentine TV stations TN, Cronica and A24.

Fernandez, whose running mate is former President Cristina Fernandez, is the main opposition to incumbent Macri.

Under local law no detailed projections could be released until three hours after polls closed at 6 p.m. (2100 GMT).

1. Argentina's Macri says primary was 'bad election' for his coalition

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentine President Mauricio Macri told his supporters that the country’s primary vote on Sunday was a “bad election” for his coalition ahead of the official results.

“Recognizing that we have had a bad election, that forces us, starting tomorrow, to redouble our efforts so that in October we will get the support that is needed to continue the change,” Macri said.

Though official results were more than an hour behind schedule, Peronist candidate Alberto Fernandez was seen leading as much as 10 percentage points ahead of Macri, according to several Argentine TV stations.

2. Pro-Macri media had predicted a 3% margin and 'market analysts', 5%: Macri lost by 15%

You know, this was in many ways like the Hoover/FDR race in 1932:

Wall Street and (by extension) most corporate media were in the tank for Hoover; red herrings, name-calling, and apocalyptic invective galore.

The media played up Hoover's chances until election day itself.

But in the end, the deepening Depression - coupled with Hoover's rank incompetence and his insincere assurances that "recovery was just around the corner" - determined the outcome, and FDR won by 18%.

You could almost substitute Macri's name for Hoover in that analogy. And I doubt Hoover was anything as callous as Macri has been.

Fernández will definitely have his work cut out for him - just as Néstor Kirchner did in '03.

He should know: he was Kirchner's top political adviser.
