Mexico startup fights air pollution with artificial trees

Trees are one of the best things we have to clean the Earth’s air, but they have certain drawbacks: they need time and space to grow.

Enter the BioUrban, an artificial tree that sucks up as much air pollution as 368 real trees.

Designed by a Mexican startup, the towering metal structure uses microalgae to clean carbon dioxide and other contaminants from the air, returning pure oxygen to the environment.

Measuring 4.2m tall and nearly 3m wide, the device looks something like a cross between a tree and a post-modernist high-rise, with a steel trunk that radiates rising bands of concentric metal.

“What this system does, through technology, is inhale air pollution and use biology to carry out the natural process (of photosynthesis), just like a tree,” says Jaime Ferrer, a founding partner in BiomiTech, the company behind the invention.

Mexicans know a thing or two about air pollution.

Artifical Tree Uses Microalgae System To Turn Pollution Into Oxygen

The system turns pollution into oxygen equivalent to over 300 trees.

Pollution is dangerously high at the moment and it only seems to be getting worse. Couple that with deforestation and it gets even worse. However, there are a few revolutionary products that are being developed to combat this. One such product is the BioUrban air purification system from BiomiTech. At the Contamination Expo Series 2018 held in Birmingham, England, the company managed to beat six other finalists in the innovation category with its BioUrban 2.0 system.

So, how does this innovative new product work? Well, the Mexican company has created an air purification system which uses microalgae to transform contaminants such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide into oxygen, effectively removing the pollution from the atmosphere and turning it into healthy oxygen! Unlike many companies these days who outsource and offshore their production and manufacture, BiomiTech is proud to say that the technology used in the system is 100% Mexican. Founding partner, Jaime Ferrer, released some more information about the system during an interview.

Features
. . .

It doesn't stop there either, there's plenty of additional bonus features built into the device for user convenience. For example, each and every system is equipped with a sensor to monitor air quality as well as wireless internet capability to transmit the data it collects. In addition to this, it doesn't produce any waste! Any microalgae that can no longer serve its purpose can even be used as a raw material for products such as biogas and biofuels.
