Lopez Obrador Reaffirms Mexico's Independence

Mexico, August 16 (Prensa Latina) President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador assured that his country will never accept to be a colony or protectorate of any foreign government.

In his usual morning press conference, Lopez stressed that Mexico is a free, independent country, and with regard to the issue of tariffs (imposed by the United States) an agreement was reached that, in his opinion, was convenient without sacrificing principles.

If they had not reached that agreement, his government would have responded likewise, he stressed, but noted that he was certain that the imposition of tariffs was not convenient for either of the two nations.

Fortunately a political understanding was reached and things are going well, but we must be careful because there are elections there (in the US) and there are political parties and positions, he emphasized.
