Russia to establish naval base in Venezuela

Friday, August 16, 2019 11:00:06 AM

The Russian and Venezuelan defense ministries have agreed to expand the cooperation between their navies.

At a meeting in Moscow on Thursday, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu and his Venezuelan counterpart Vladimir Podrino Lopez signed an agreement to allow visits by military vessels.

As part of the agreement, the Venezuelan ports will be opened to the Russian Navy, effectively enabling Russia to acquire a naval base in Latin America.

Since December 2017, Russia has had a similar agreement with Syria, which allowed Russia to deploy as many as 10 ships and two submarines in the Mediterranean Sea at the peak of its campaign to support Bashar al-Assad.

5. Exactly. And my feelings towards the Monroe Doctrine are decidedly mixed as...

the US as an imperialistic power has meddled in the internal politics of other nations in this Hemisphere for more than a century by fomenting war, coups, assassinations, occupations, overthrows and installations of puppet governments all for the exploitation of these nations' natural resources. This exploitation (United Fruit Company, Standard Fruit/Dole and others, mining companies also, netted trillions over the decades but eventually fell apart from revolutions and subsequent installations of more leftist governments, resulting in the US cutting foreign aid drastically (trump and others). Drug cartels arose from weakened and devastated economies, bringing with them violence and turmoil followed by thousands of refugees showing at our southern border seeking asylum from the drug violence and non-functioning economies no longer propped up by exploitative US companies. And trump of course has done his part by fomenting hate and fear at "caravans of "scary others" seeking refuge from the destroyed economies our damaging corporate and clandestine government policies helped create.

We should be "throwing open the golden door" as we did when white refugees came through Ellis Island from Europe just about 100 years ago. The border situation should be a repeat of that instead of the disgraceful debacle that it is of kids in cages and families separated. But it's trump so it's going to be chaos and shameful denigration of POCS. That's who he is.

So I'm not exactly a fan of the Monroe Doctrine because of what it wrought in the past but it makes me nervous that Russia is going to have aircraft carriers with fighter jets and cruise missiles based not that far away from our southern border.

So glad to see your comments. Thank you.

Most of the people coming are not Mexican at all. They're seeking refuge from destroyed economies that we've yanked aid from resulting in drug cartels and violence filling the vacuum.

It's a mess and trump is the lest qualified person in the hemisphere to handle it.
