The Troubling Relationships Between Bolsonaro and Dictatorships

When he was a congressman, the walls of Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro’s office were decorated with photos of Brazilian dictators. Bolsonaro has repeatedly defended the Brazilian military dictatorship that ruled from 1964 to1985. He even paid homage to the Chilean dictator, Augusto Pinochet. In an interview in 2015, Bolsonaro said that Pinochet “had to act violently to recover the country” and, on several occasions, stated that the dictator “did what had to be done” and that he “should have killed more people”.

It was no surprise that thousands of Chileans took to the streets to protest his visit to the country last March. Chilean politicians refused to meet him, and even President Sebastián Piñera consideredhis statements in support of the dictator “unfortunate”. Recently, Bolsonaro also expressed admiration for the dictator (also rapist and paedophile) General Stroessner of Paraguay.

Historian Murilo Cleto keeps a mental registry of Bolsonaro’s views of the past. “When Brazil erected a statue in honour of Rubens Paiva, a state representative kidnapped by the military in 1971 whose body has not yet been found, Bolsonaro went to the event to spit on it. In reference to the relatives of the guerrilla fighters killed and disappeared in the Araguaia, Bolsonaro said ‘those who look for bone are dogs’. To Matheus Leitão, son of journalist Miriam Leitão, who was placed pregnant, naked and alone with a snake in a dark room of an army battalion, Bolsonaro said he felt sorry for the snake,” Murillo Cleto recalled.

A former Army Capitan, Bolsonaro is also a confessed admirer of Colonel Carlos Alberto Brilhante Ustra, one of the heads of torture centres during the military dictatorship. In a speech during a visit to Israel last month, Bolsonaro once again praised the torturer while also stating that Nazism would be a left-wing ideology.

I recently came back from BA after a six week vacation. I couldn't help but notice there is an Iglesia Universal del Reino De Dios on just about every street corner. If you google Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in Loas Angeles, you'll see they are all over the place there as well. Same logo, same everything. The meeting between president Jair Bolsonaro and Paraguayan president Mario Abdo Benítez was marked by controversy when, during his speech, the Brazilian called former dictator Alfredo Stroessner a “statesman”.

The context of his praise regarded the Paraguayan’s support in the construction of the Itaipu plant, however, at a moment in which Brazil is occupying a position of relevance along the Lima Group after endorsing requests for a redemocratization of Venezuela, his speech caused discomfort, since Stroessner was one of the most controversial of all South American dictators.

A military officer which belonged to the most backward wing of the Colorado Party, he rose to power after helping to overthrow Federico Chavez through a coup, in 1954, and then winning the following election – in which he was the sole candidate.

Remaining in the Palacio de los López until 1989, his administration was marked by a constant state of emergency and an appearance of democracy: there was an opposition, a parliament and elections were held, but the regime exerted its control through censorship and the arrest, exile or murder of the main opposition figures. Besides, elections were rigged – Stroessner obtained over 90 percent of voting intentions in all eight elections he took part.

Josef Mengele was a doctor with the German SS. At Auschwitz, he was the man who conducted the bulk of the medical experiments on the inmates and, in particular, was doing all this research on twins that became so notorious subsequently. He was one of the major Nazi war criminals who was not in custody at the time of the Nuremberg trials. After the war, he hid in Germany for a while but then with the assistance of his family, which owned a farm tool company, escaped to Argentina, where he lived under an alias for quite a few years during the Peron era without much danger to him. After Peron was deposed in 1955, many of the Nazi war criminals hiding in Argentina began to feel less safe and Mengele for one, moved to Paraguay. He acquired Paraguayan citizenship under his own name. President Alfredo Stroessner the Paraguayan dictator was well‐known for hiding Nazi war criminals, although Argentina was the most notorious of them all.
