'Another Attempted Coup': US Rebuked for 'Absurd' Drug Trafficking Charges Against Venezuela's Madur

"An absurd demonstration of Washington's gangsterism."

by Eoin Higgins, staff writer

The U.S. Department of Justice on Thursday announced charges of international drug trafficking against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a move that was immediately denounced by progressives as a cynical Washington attempt to overthrow the Latin American leader as the coronavirus outbreak spreads around the world.

"This is just another attempted coup against Maduro," tweeted CodePink.

Attorney General William Barr revealed the charges in a press conference, offering $15 million for information leading to Maduro's capture.

"I am old enough to have seen this one before," said veteran media critic Peter Hart, making a likely reference to former Panamanian ruler and CIA asset Manuel Noriega, the last Latin American leader charged with drug trafficking, who the U.S overthrew in 1989.

There is so much going on under the cover of COVID-19, but then, you would expect mobsters to do their dirty work in darkness.

What ticks me off is that ALL of our resources should be focused on a clear and present danger, (well, yeah, Trump, too) in our country right now that is deadly and devastating.

So, much for that America First bull line because their is plenty of activity in Latin America and overseas. Not very "firsty".

There should be more coverage by media on the "side orders" that El Presidente is getting with his COVIDberder. We can handle that news, too. We need to know.

only handing out any information, or disinformation, when it advances and enhances the reputation of the right-winger at the helm. They've cultivated a realm of totally deluded, misdirected, hostile xenophobes who will start salivating at the drop of a hat if they think there's a chance to invade, attack, overthrow, assassinate any leftist elected President.

You're so right concerning concealment. This is a time for massive dirty doings.

It's getting harder for any hope the corporate media will cover important foreign chicanery now that it is almost exclusively owned by mega conservative interests accelerating during Reagan's assault on democracy.

It's good to hope that having access to internet, for the time being, at least, will allow those of us who care, for good reasons, to try to keep track of what might be happening, anyway! Knock on wood.

Thanks.

It is very important.

I suggest sites like Democracy Now and a program called Empire Files with Abby Martin on YT. Maybe those are too extreme for some here, but they do report rather professionally on said topics. For some folks, that kind of material would be shocking or like getting dropped in cold water.

I am glad you recognize this issue.
