Bill to purchase Cuba's vaccine submitted to Honduran Congress
Tegucigalpa, Apr 30 (Prensa Latina) The Honduran National Congress (Parliament) on Friday received a bill submitted by Congresswoman Scherly Arriaga which proposes the purchase of Cuba's Covid-19 vaccine Soberana.
'I have submitted the bill so that Honduras, through the National Congress and the Health Commission, begins to contract Cuba's vaccine Soberana through a strict oversight process by civil society,' the legislator from the Liberty and Refoundation Party (LIBRE) posted on her Twitter account.
Arriaga also posted a video on Twitter in which she criticized the work done by the Government of President Juan Orlando Hernandez, which 'has been unable to manage, administer or initiate contracts to purchase the Covid-19 vaccine efficiently and transparently.'
The congresswoman said that for that reason, she submitted the bill in Congress on Thursday to purchase the so-called Soberana vaccine, developed by Cuba's pharmaceutical industry.
Through the Parliamentary Health Commission, with strict oversight by civil society and accompanied by the National Anticorruption Council, the LIBRE legislator proposes to manage the contracting and purchase of the Cuban vaccine.
Honduras is the most backward country in Central America regarding vaccination against the disease that is causing the current pandemic and, according to a specialized foundation, if it continued at that rate, it would take 11 years to immunize its population.

(There were DU'ers watching that military coup in 2009 when it happened, with some good progressives, and a few progressive imposters here, defending the coup. Honduras went directly into the dumper with the armed kidnapping of President Zelaya, and became immersed in terrorism by the fascist interim state, torture, assassinations, military police patroling the streets, grabbing citizens, one of whom showed up tortured and dead immediately in the field next to the police barracks in the capitol, enforced curfews which only allowed the people to race directly home after work, electricity, gas, and phones, were turned off, so they couldn't keep refrigerated food at home, and they didn't have enough time to pick up groceries on the way home from work.

The second Honduran coup came today
Because the first one failed

On the morning of June 28, coup regime soldiers stomped into the offices of Radio Globo and Channel 36 in Tegucigalpa and silenced their transmitters. The two networks filed court orders to be able to get back on the air. And for the past three months they’ve each been subject to written orders from the Honduras regime to cease broadcasting (the journalists, in turn, refused to be censored) and to paramilitary attacks that poured acid on their transmitters, and yet they and their journalists heroically got themselves back on the air rapidly.
On this morning, three months later, it was déjà vu all over again, as those same military troops reenacted the battle of June 28, busting down the doors of both broadcasters and this time removing their transmitters and equipment. And soldiers have surrounded both houses of media to prevent the people from retaking them.
This time, due to yesterday’s coup decree [see below], there is no legal recourse for the journalists. Under the decree, if a judge even looks at a motion from those media, he, too, can be rounded up, arrested and detained. And if another media reports what happened, it, too, can be invaded and silenced by force.
Today’s “do over” of the June 28 Honduras coup proves two big truths.
First: that the original coup failed to establish control over the country and its people. More than 90 days of nonviolent resistance have demolished what little support the coup regime had inside and outside of Honduras, and left them only with their small core of oligarchs and security forces to defend their putsch against the majority.
And second: That despite all the regime’s Orwellian talk of how it was a “legal” coup, how it was executed to defend the Constitution, and how the continued broadcasting of critical media proved it was not a dictatorship, its intention all along was far more sinister: to erase democracy and its most basic freedoms in order to establish autocratic control by a few over 7.5 million Honduran citizens and the lush natural and human resources in that land.
A significant portion of the Honduran population has gone underground overnight. Tipped off that last night their homes would be raided and they would be hauled off to the soccer stadium in Tegucigalpa where the regime already holds at least 75 citizens incommunicado -- reports of the use of torture are all the more credible because the regime won’t allow any attorney, doctor or human rights observer inside the stadium to inspect -- other rank-and-file Hondurans opened their homes to resistance organizers throughout the country. They are hiding from the regime, but they are in constant contact with each other, and with our reporters.

Lamborn defends Honduras trek despite coup policy

DENVER — A Colorado Republican is defending his visit to a Honduran leader deemed illegitimate by the White House.
Rep. Doug Lamborn joined three other Republicans on Friday to meet interim President Roberto Micheletti in Tegucigalpa, the Honduran capital. The Obama administration has condemned the coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya and brought Micheletti to power.
“It was not a coup,” Lamborn told The Associated Press by telephone from Miami, where the GOP delegation stopped to refuel on their way back to Washington.
“Now, let me say, they should have arrested him and thrown him in jail instead of sending him out of the country,” Lamborn added. “But either way, what (Zelaya) was trying to do was illegal.”
Friday’s trip highlighted a divide between congressional Republicans and the administration over Honduras and Latin America policy in general.
The White House is working to reinstate Zelaya, and the U.S. and the European Union have suspended aid to Honduras.
