Biden administration to issue list of corrupt Central American officials & impose travel ban

May 7th, 2021 | Michael O'Kane

Ricardo Zúñiga, the US Special Envoy for the Northern Triangle, has said that by the end of June 2021, a list will be published of officials from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras that are alleged to have engaged in significant corruption and the undermining of democratic institutions, as required under the Northern Triangle Enhanced Engagement Act. The Act was introduced by Eliot Engel, the Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and passed in December 2020. It requires that the Biden administration publish an “Engel List” of such officials, who will subsequently be denied entry into the US. Mr Zúñiga also confirmed that the administration is considering whether to impose sanctions on certain officials from these 3 countries under Executive Order 13818 (Global Magnitsky sanctions).
