Union leader Pedro Castillo confirmed as Peru's president-elect

Peru's Electoral Tribunal announced that legal challenges to the nation's recent presidential elections have been reviewed and rejected, thus confirming union leader Pedro Castillo as the nation's president-elect.

The June 6th run-off vote had ended with political outsider Castillo, 51, and his left-wing Free Peru coalition ahead by a narrow margin of 44,000 votes out of over 18 million cast.

The official result had been delayed by challenges from opponent Keiko Fujimori, 46, of the hard-right Popular Force to annul some ballots on claims of fraud, despite little evidence.

The Organization of American States, European Union, Canada, Britain, and the U.S. State Department have all stated that the elections in Peru were clean.

Castillo would take office on July 28 for a five-year term as leader of the nation of 33 million, the world's second largest copper-producer.

Peruvian President-elect Pedro Castillo and running mate Dina Boluarte celebrate their runoff victory on June 6th.

A series of challenges by hard-right opponent Keiko Fujimori, some involving jailed former intelligence head Vladimiro Montesinos (her father Alberto Fujimori's spymaster during his authoritarian, 1990-2000 rule), were struck down by Peru's Electoral Tribunal today.

Fujimori's unfounded accusations of electoral fraud, which sought to annul results in rural areas where Castillo won handily, have prompted prosecutors to launch an investigation into Fujimori for possible crimes against the right to vote and false statements.

Peru's Castillo set to be confirmed election winner as right-wing challenge founders
Marco Aquino

LIMA, July 14 (Reuters) - A bid by conservative Keiko Fujimori to flip the result of Peru's June 6 presidential election looks to have run out of road, setting the stage for socialist rival Pedro Castillo to be confirmed the Andean country's next leader.

The run-off vote had ended with political outsider Castillo ahead by a narrow margin of 44,000 votes, but the official result has been delayed by challenges from Fujimori to annul some ballots on claims of fraud, despite little evidence.

Those challenges have now been fully reviewed and rejected by electoral authorities, a lawyer for Fujimori's conservative Popular Force party told Reuters on Wednesday.

Fujimori's party plans to challenge more ballots from some electoral districts, but those total only around 5,400 votes. That would not be enough to change the result of the election, although it could delay the announcement and complicate the transfer of power to Castillo.

"At the moment the numbers favor him, with about 40,000 votes," the lawyer Julio César Castiglioni told Reuters by phone. He said that once the process before the National Elections Jury has been exhausted, there was no plan by the Fujimori campaign to take further legal action.

The Organization of American States, European Union, Canada, Britain and the U.S. State Department have all stated that the elections in Peru were clean.

If confirmed in time, Castillo would take office on July 28 for a five-year term as leader of the world's second largest copper-producing nation.

Very best wishes to President-elect Castillo. Hoping this progressive president can find a way to bring relief to the suffering indigenous and poor Peruvian masses, after such a long, torturous history.

Thank you for the news, pepertree. Highest hope for a hard-working person of character to steer Peru toward a decent future.
