PM's multilingual greeting shocks Peru's right-wing Parliament

Lima, Aug 26 (Prensa Latina) Peru's Prime Minister Guido Bellido greeted the parliamentary plenary on Thursday in Quechua and Aymara, which triggered complaints from right-wing legislators, apparently offended for not speaking two official languages.

That was the symbolic beginning of the presentation of the Ministerial Cabinet in order to obtain the approval of the opposition majority plenary, without which all ministers would have to resign.

The president of the Congress of the Republic, Maria del Carmen Alva, asked Bellido, as they had previously agreed, to translate into Spanish what he had said in Andean languages because she did not understand either.

Bellido continued speaking in Quechua and, showing the Constitution, recalled it recognizes Aymara and Quechua as official languages although they are not taught in schools, and intercultural education is still precarious.

The PM explained that his aim was to show that many have not understood there are many peoples with their own culture and language in Peru, who are not understood, and began his dissertation in which he included several paragraphs in Quechua.

PM urges Congress members to settle differences for sake of Peru

10:35 | Lima, Aug. 26.

Peruvian Prime Minister Guido Bellido on Thursday urged lawmakers to set aside differences and contribute to solving one of the most serious crises in recent decades caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I stand before you to invite you, motivated by the responsibility of being the bearers of people's trust, to lay down our differences and jointly contribute to solving one of the most serious political, social, environmental, and health crises of recent decades," Bellido expressed at the beginning of his speech at Parliament.

Likewise, the high-ranking official ratified the commitment of President Pedro Castillo to develop public policies and measures that allow the beginning of a new stage in the nation's republican life.

The Cabinet Chief stressed that the message bringing the Executive and Legislative Branches together is essentially motivated by the spirit of broadest unity.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister warned that disagreements have led to the fact that —while Peruvians engage in feuds and divisiveness— other brother nations move forward.

Moreover, Bellido emphasized that Peru relies on all resources to become a world power. However, it has not been possible because of the people who have not "put on the country's jersey" and —instead— turned their backs on the people.

"Today, Peru would be a developed country. History shows that at every step (...) For more than 500 years we, Peruvians, have been estranged. There had been no bridges. Besides, how difficult it is to be able to sit down and dialogue, "he said.

The Cabinet head began his speech before Congress to request a vote of confidence with a greeting in Quechua and Aymara languages.

In accordance with Article 130 of the Constitution, the Prime Minister must attend Congress —joined by the Cabinet— to present the Government's general policy and the main measures pursued by the Executive Branch.
