In an emotional open letter to the British prime minister, Cristina Kirchner, Argentina’s president, has called on him to honour a United Nations resolution dating from 1965 and start negotiations about handing over the islands.

The letter, which was due to be published in the British national newspaper The Guardian on Thursday, is timed to mark the anniversary of when on January 3 1833, Britain took control of the islands from the Falklands.

It says: “One hundred and eighty years ago on this same date, January 3rd, in a blatant exercises of 19th century colonialism, Argentina was forcibly stripped of the Malvinas Islands, which are situated 14,000 km (8,700 miles) away from London.

The UK is as fully determined to use military force today as it was in the days of Margaret Thatcher, and it's far beyond any ability of Argentina to resist. Argentina should remember the Belgrano and forget about these islands.

5. Not gonna happen.

The islanders are nearly all descended from British immigrants, the culture and language are British and Britain has maintained and protected the islands for 180 years. The islanders are British citizens, always have been and they like it that way.

Argentina doesn't give a rip about the islands or the people there. It wants control of the oil in the Exclusive Economic Zone that the islands are entitled to by the UN Law of the Sea treaty that most nations, including Argentina, have signed.

Anyone that thinks Britain wouldn't get a lot of international support for an armed conflict triggered by an Argentine invasion in the Falklands probably wasn't paying attention in 1982.

9. UK prime minister rebuffs Argentina over Falklands

Downing Street has strongly rebuffed a call by Argentina's president for the UK to return the islands.

Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner had urged UK Prime Minister David Cameron to abide by a 1965 UN resolution to "negotiate a solution" over the area.

But a spokesman for Mr Cameron said the people of the Falklands had shown "a clear desire to remain British" and their interests would be protected.

A referendum on the islands' political status is to be held in March.
