A new bill introduced by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) would shine a light on corporate wrongdoing by allowing the public greater access to terms of settlements they reach with the government.
When government agencies reach settlements with companies that break the law, they should disclose the terms of those deals to the public, Warren said.
She said federal agencies should disclose the key terms and conditions of agreements reached with corporations at the close of investigations, and she also argued that tax deductions and other credits built into the settlements should be publicly disclosed.
For example, when the U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency settled its lawsuit in May against Citigroup over false claims made to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
unhappycamper comment: I read (this week I think) that the Stature of Limitations for financial fraud is only five years and Eric Holder has done shit to prosecute the Big Boys.

(5,610 posts)are in the same elitist club. That is why we need a new party that is for the average (majority) American.
Bernie Sanders would set us on the right course.

(60,364 posts)The problem I have with Bernie is his undying support for the F-35 being based in Vermont. By extension, Bernie also thinks the F-35 is a good deal.
Other than that, I like him a lot.

(1 post)Given that these banks are a huge player in the recession, it would be helpful to know that they have paid some price for their wrongdoing. It's also a matter of freedom of information. The DOJ is an extension of the American people, and, as such, should allow us to know what they have settled these banks. Most of us are suffering the consequences of their actions, so we should know the penalty
