Homeowner in rich neighborhood tired of passing out candy to ‘poor kids’

Homeowner in rich neighborhood tired of passing out candy to ‘poor kids’

By Amy Graff on October 24, 2014

A penny-pinching curmudgeon who claims to live in an average house in a rich neighborhood has written a maddening letter to Slate‘s advice columnist Prudence complaining about the financial burden of passing out candy to the droves of “poor kids” who show up on her doorstep on Halloween.

This unnamed person is disgruntled by the Oliver Twists showing up on her modest block that’s home to lawyers and doctors and feels the far-richer billionaires living in the mansions only blocks away should be responsible for the “riffraff.”

The letter, which is bound to make any decent person’s blood boil, reads:

I have noticed that on Halloween, what seems like 75 percent of the trick-or-treaters are clearly not from this neighborhood. Kids arrive in overflowing cars from less fortunate areas. I feel this is inappropriate. Halloween isn’t a social service or a charity in which I have to buy candy for less fortunate children. Obviously this makes me feel like a terrible person, because what’s the big deal about making less fortunate kids happy on a holiday? But it just bugs me, because we already pay more than enough taxes toward actual social services.

phony to me. I can't believe someone would think that way, let alone write a letter about it.

Right wingers are obsessed with the idea that "poor people" are taking advantage of hard-working Americans.

The kids around here go to the store or city-sponsored celebrations so they are safely monitored, but can still T/T with their friends.

This person has taken on the role of Grinch of Halloween. How thoughtful.
