Domino's Pizza is getting eaten alive by the worker shortage

Domino's Pizza (DPZ) just saw sales fall after 41 straight quarters of U.S. same-store sales increases, ending one of the most impressive runs in the fast food industry. That streak ground to a halt largely because of the worker shortage pounding low wage sectors such as retail, restaurants, and hospitality.

Domino's U.S. same-store sales fell 1.9%, a sharp reversal from a 17.5% increase the same quarter last year, the company said Thursday. Same-store sales at company-operated and franchise-owned stores dropped 8.9% and 1.5%, respectively.

They went through 18 months of people sitting at home ordering take out. Now they are back to going to restaurants. Of course sales will go down.

Yes, they are down relative to last year when other restaurants weren't open or had limited capacity.

Compared to two years ago, sales are up.

These year to year comparison need to be put in context. Of course, the same will be done to Biden in Q1 next year...a lot fewer jobs added compared to Q1 of 2021 because there was so much growth the previous year, a more normal result looks like a decrease

SO many good local pizza places to choose from. At least where I live. I fully realize that is not the case for everyone. I usually make my own, but once in awhile I splurge for really good combination from my favorite local.

So the numbers are not really that twisted.

What's interesting is some of the ideas that they have to get all of that good money back. For example; Rich Allison their HMFIC says, “In the future, I don’t see why drivers should ever get out of their cars,” he said. “They’d be maximizing deliveries per hour and wages they earn.”

Bottom line: Crappy pizza that you have to wait on the curb for. Brilliant!

8. Oh, that's a good one. That ought to really help a driver's wages and I don't see an owner ...

... boosting wages or customers paying a premium for that privilege.

Maybe they can go ice cream truck style and send trucks around town with pizzas, driving slow and playing 'Sorrento' on in bell tones on a loud speaker to let everyone know the Pizza Prowler is in the neighborhood.
