If you pay someone $24 an hour to bag your fries you are killing the idea that people want to move up
and out of those positions. Also if the fry guy makes that amount of money what do you pay a teacher/nurse/department story clerk/IT person? Will those people be satisfied earning what someone at Burger King does?
How do you fairly compensate everyone if this is your starting point? What kind of disability/welfare/unemployment monies are tied to this base salary? Will food stamps end? WIC? School Lunches?

Yea, that gets close to $50,000 a year. That's wonderful, but it would cause the economy to shift up. Don't misunderstand, I want a raise in the minimum raise, but . . .

and honestly I think that would be a good starting point for folks.

We will pay for it by eliminating ridiculous salaries at high levels. How about legislation so that the CEO can't make more than 10x his/her lowest paid employee?

A bit of equalizing if you will.

I'll sure we can trust you to set reasonable incomes up for everyone trying to make a living.

So you would rate a department store clerk with teachers and nurses?

Let's step on a few more throats.

I'll give you a clue. You start with reasonable wages for everyone - NOT CEO's making millions or billions a year. If you do that you can at least bring more of the country up to poverty level.

Life Long Democrat my ass.

She is a powerful voice in the Senate, I am so proud of her.

From the comments page many seemed to be fixated on "burger flippers". There are a hell of a lot more jobs out there that are paid minimum wage or just over that. Trust me, I know. I lost my job that paid a decent base salary and a very good commission and excellent bonuses. After 11 years they closed. I was in my 50's when I had to find other work. A hard age to be seeking new employment. I found one management position that offered me a salary that I had been paid 20 years earlier.

I finally found a position that paid just over minimum with the worst commission pay that I had ever seen. I took it, because there was nothing out there. I also took a 20K pay cut. I am educated, professional and damn good at what I do. Yet they are not willing to pay for any of that. You are only a work horse to an employer these days, it's do or die.

Thanks freshwest great video of Warren.

but rather people never advance beyond those low wages.

Fast food and low end Walmart positions are jobs for people just entering the labor force, not for lifelong careers.

Part of the solution is too better equip the populace with skills that would allow greater control over one's career path.

I think single payer and more heavily subsidized advanced education would go a long way towards making that happen.
