The International Nutrition plant damaged in Monday's deadly collapse likely will need to be completely demolished, said Jay Davis, Superintendent of Building and Development for the City of Omaha.

Davis said Wednesday morning the plant is more heavily damaged than officials initially believed. On Monday, fire officials said about 25 percent of the building had been damaged. After Davis' staff toured the facility late Tuesday with OSHA, he said, it's clear the structure is “severely damaged.”

“The structure has been compromised, not just in the area where the accident occurred, but in other parts of the building,” he said. “Some of the structural beams and columns have been compromised further than we initially thought.”

But Davis said it will be up to the building's owner to make the decision about whether to demolish all of the structure or work to salvage part of it.
