Sherwin, union again fail to reach agreement
The latest round of labor talks between the Sherwin Alumina Co. and the union representing hundreds of locked-out workers ended with no new contract.
Representatives from Sherwin Alumina and the United Steelworkers, Local 235-A met in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Monday and Tuesday to resume bargaining and exchange proposals.
Both sides said they began their talks in hopes of ending an 11-month lockout at Sherwin's plant near Gregory. They were unable to reach an agreement, according to statements issued Wednesday by both parties.
The company's proposal also allows for continued health care for current employees when they retire until they reach age 65, and provides for a per hour contribution toward retiree health care after age 65 for all existing employees and new hires.
