POINT LOMA — On Saturday night, 13-year-old Alex Honoré will spend a sleepless night outdoors under a makeshift cardboard shelter to shield herself from the cold and damp.

It’s a tradition the Tierrasanta teen has taken part in every year since the age of 5, as part of the San Diego Rescue Mission's annual Sleepless San Diego event. Held in a riverside park at Liberty Station, the overnight event will draw 1,200 to 1,400 people for a fundraising program that includes entertainment, volunteer activities and education about San Diego’s homeless population.

Since the first Sleepless San Diego event in 2007, Alex has attended each year and has become a vocal advocate for the Mission’s homeless charities. She has raised money for the group, appeared in several of its television commercials and ads and this year plans to bring her youth hula group to dance for the crowd.

Herb Johnson, president and CEO of the Rescue Mission, said Alex has been a big part of the campaign because she’s articulate, passionate and wise beyond her years.
