Mailed my taxes 9 weeks ago, still no #2 or #3 Stim checks and no refund

There's little guidance on what to do. Visit Get My Payment. Sit and wait.

I expect this to drag on through July into August.

IRS has a backlog we are told. Don't call them. Even if you do you get automated system and told to visit Get My Payment.

Taxpayer Advocate doesn't sound promising, but I suppose if it's late summer they might listen.

No way to check if your ID's been hacked and your return's been misdirected.

This is just a crazy system.

The only began sending refunds to UI recipients in May. I filed in Feb. and just got my refund last week.

It should be coming some time in May... IF you filed electronically AND you have direct deposit.

And yes indeed... it's a complicated mess this year.

The transcripts show if and when any refunds have been issued.

The sign up process takes several minutes because it’s pretty thorough. They do ask for a credit card number or bank/car loan info as a way to verify your identity. It’s a free service, though.

Go to IRS.gov and click on the View Your Account Information button to create an account.

I did this to track my #2 stimulus because it took forever to arrive.

Edit: almost forgot- at the part when it asks for a tax ID number or employer tax ID number (can’t remember the which one it asks for), just leave that box blank.

You can see the date a refund or stimulus check was issued, or when they processed your tax return (including how much your refund or amount owed is/was).

I learned about it on Reddit when trying to track down my 2nd stimulus. The IRS site calls these records transcripts. That’s all I know about it.

Where's my tax refund? Americans face delays as IRS holds nearly 30M tax returns for manual processing
https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2021/04/23/stimulus-check-update-2021-tax-refund-delay-covid-relief-payments/7344076002/

Why is it taking so long to get tax refunds this year?:Some are taking the IRS 6-8 weeks in 2021

Of the nearly 30 million returns being held for manual processing, more than 8 million individual returns were in “suspense” status awaiting review and manual processing, as of the week ended April 9.

Why? The $900 billion stimulus package signed into law in December, known as the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, didn’t leave the agency enough time to prepare for some of the tax code changes before the delayed filing season began Feb. 12.
With the COVID-19 pandemic shaking up nearly every aspect of life in 2020 and into 2021, the Internal Revenue Service opted to push back the federal tax filing deadline. Instead of April 15, federal taxes should now be completed by May 17.

______

An additional 3 million being reviewed are individual 2019 and 2020 paper returns. Plus, 7 million more individual returns have processing errors or fraud identification issues requiring responses from taxpayers. And another 11 million business and other returns have been held for manual processing.

___________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________

So there's a gap a mile wide between what they are telling us for PR purposes - use Get My Payment - and what is actually going on in the processing.

The press seems to visit this subject about every 4 weeks. As time moves along the backlog gets bigger and bigger. Seems to me there was an interview with the Taxpayer Advocate in Feb or early March that said they had like 10 million paper returns to process, everything is stored in trailers, and they have to work through them. Now it's 30 million plus 11 million business returns!

The first stim check I had in a week by direct deposit. Don't understand why #2 wasn't just as simple for them, none of my information has changed.

I wonder if the Trump IRS guy didn't flood the system with petty audits so the Big Fish could skate.

You have to tell them how much you are owed. My friend got her missing 1200 and 600 applied to her tax liability with the excess 462 sent to her bank account. She filed about 25 days ago. I read some irs offices are behind processing returns for reasons such as running out of toner.

She is still owed the 1400. Apparently if you never get that 1400 by next year there will be a similar line for missing stimulus on next years tax return.

There is a line called recovery credit. It must show the amount of stimulus one and two you are owed but did not get. If there is not the correct amount shown , if it is blank for instance, then the IRS will not send you the money. They will assume you got it already.

thing, not just a summary ... actually in three different PDF versions: (a) the basic tax return (what one needs to send in if sending in a paper return), (b) the basic tax return + some worksheets marked "keep for your records", and (c) same as (b) plus even more worksheets and listings and yada.

Caveat: I only have experience with the unfree version of TurboTax because my AGI or whatever is too high to qualify for the free version. And I can't see "the real thing" described above until I pay for it. Until then, I can only see certain summaries.

No good. And what's more, I must see the real thing in order to check all the numbers. TurboTax summaries are not granular enough to make sure everything is OK.

You do have to sign over a form to let them access your records and act in your behalf.

Meanwhile, I filed form F3911 which is a no refund received form, and sent it to a different IRS processing office. The one in UT has done this to me before - waiting until August and I have to write them a letter to ask them to process it. Ridiculous. So I sent to Kansas City MO. Seems to me I filed this form once before too.

No I'm not on record insulting Congress critters.

Thanks for the input, I try to game this out 2 months ahead to get it resolved soon.

27. Taxpayer Advocate says there's no record of my taxes, check back in 30 days
Wed Oct 20, 2021, 03:28 PM
Oct 2021

She kept telling me to go online see if they received my taxes. WTF? I can't use "Where's my refund?" because I don't have a specifc dollar amount, the IRS was calculating EIC.

She said if I ask my Congressman's office they will contact the Taxpayer Advocate and see the same information she sees which is nothing and say there's no record of my taxes "in the system".

She said it's good I'm expecting a refund because that means I'm not trying to skip town on paying taxes, and that refunds can be issued up to 3 years after due date. I thought I read the STIM refunds had to be done by the end of this year.

She thinks the taxes were never received by the IRS. I asked if she has made a record in her system of today's call. Yes.

DO NOT WRITE to the IRS again, she says. They won't reply. DO NOT SEND ANOTHER COPY OF YOUR TAXES. Call back in 30 days and see if we ask you to send another copy.

It seemed to me more like 'we can't say anything' and there's something she's not telling me. There was a bit of light gasping, like either the IRS is so swamped it's just terrible, or you're up to no good not sending your taxes.

This is unbelievable.

They said Congressional office will just take the info and call up the taxpayer advocate. But thanks for the thought!

IRS says though I was issued a direct deposit refund, the return has not been processed yet. So I must wait for an IRS letter to again ask for EIC calculation. This is already past the 20 weeks max (it's already past 9 months), they have not processed my July request to process the return. The IRS lady was a stern disapproving argumentative type, who said answering the phone was distracting people from processing returns. So this will drag into 2022!

These must be the same guys that are auditing Trump.
