More of the same, in other words. Re. the "monopoly" bit: if he were governor of , say , Oklahoma, wouldn't we be calling him a "tea partier"?

ALBANY — Vowing to break “one of the only remaining public monopolies,” Gov. Cuomo on Monday said he’ll push for a new round of teacher evaluation standards if re-elected.
Cuomo, during a meeting with the Daily News Editorial Board, said better teachers and competition from charter schools are the best ways to revamp an underachieving and entrenched public education system.
“I believe these kinds of changes are probably the single best thing that I can do as governor that’s going to matter long-term,” he said, “to break what is in essence one of the only remaining public monopolies — and that’s what this is, it’s a public monopoly.”
He said the key is to put “real performance measures with some competition, which is why I like charter schools.”
Cuomo said he will push a plan that includes more incentives — and sanctions — that “make it a more rigorous evaluation system.”
Cuomo expects fierce opposition from the state’s teachers, who are already upset with him and have refused to endorse his re-election bid.
“The teachers don’t want to do the evaluations and they don’t want to do rigorous evaluations — I get it,” Cuomo said. “I feel exactly opposite.”

Cuomo in 2012 won enactment of a new system tying teacher performance to the Common Core curriculum testing results.
The implementation of some of those standards was delayed for two years earlier this year in recognition of the sloppy roll-out of the Common Core program.
Cuomo accused teachers of having tried to torpedo the Common Core curriculum in fighting the evaluation standards — and expects they will again.
“They will be using it the way they used it, I believe — to get the parents upset last year about this entire Common Core agenda,” he said.
On other matters, Cuomo refused to say whether he or members of his administration have been subpoenaed by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, who is probing the governor’s handling of his anti-corruption commission.
“Call Mr. Preet Bharara and ask him about his investigation,” Cuomo demurred.

(43,049 posts)voted straight Democrat except for Governor-- I just left that one blank. The rest of the slate is people I know and have worked for and hope they win. Cuomo will win, and the only good thing there is that the other guy's worse.
Except for party hacks, who have to love him, pretty much every one I know out here thinks Cuomo's a dick.

(43,049 posts)people regularly leave blanks on all sorts of stuff, especially those propositions on the back. I remember one guy who left the whole thing blank-- said he believed everyone should vote, but didn't like anyone running that year.
I think I'm going to stop voting for judges, too. I vote for them by party, but don't know anything about them except they all take huge donations from lawyers. Electing judges is idiotic anyway.

(43,049 posts)like voting for two people for Governor. Even then, the machines we use can be forced to accept the rest of the ballot so the other votes will count.
Missing votes means nothing to the machines. It's expected some people or things wan't get voted on.

I don't understand how some think a good job can't get done unless there is a competitor and a risk of losing everything. Perhaps if education was treated like a priority there would be better results.

Like hell we need more "for profit" schools around here.

(14,498 posts)i.e. in megabucks private schools w. NO CCSS, NO convoluted NYS teacher eval formula, NO class size larger than mandated by law (rather 12 or 15 kids to a class, I'll wager.) and NO Race to the Top.
If I recall .....there's just one of the girls left in prep school, the others having graduated.
Anyway.... it's always a source of amazement to me how people like Cuomo, Obama, Gates, Duncan, and on and on and on..... can know SO MUCH (!!!!) about public schools without EVER in their LIVES having had anything to DO with them.
Either as provider or consumer.
I don't get it. There must be some kind of osmosis-like phenomenon going on between them and their household staff. You know, butlers, maids, drivers, nannys, etc.

(2,331 posts)Were in public or private schools before he became president. It very well may be easier for the SS to protect them if they're in a small private school. But besides his time in Indonesia I doubt Obama was in private school prior to college. If you do please share.

(Duncan went there too, If I'm not mistaken. Father was on the faculty of U of C.)
Obama: Punahou School in Honolulu. From age 10 on. Private and expensive. ( My guess is he won an academic scholarship. No ever said he wasn't a good student.)
Grandparents pulled strings to get him in there, however. He jumped the line, so to speak. It's in "Dreams From My Father".
He did go to both private ( Catholic) and "public" school as a very young child in Indonesia. I "" the "public" because I'm not sure "public" school means exactly the same thing in Indonesia as it means here. ( I suspect it does not; but I could be wrong.)
The president... to the best of my knowledge never attended an American public school.
Nor did his children.
This being the case... I can't help but wonder how he came upon his ideas about public education.
I think if we could determine *that*.... we ( teachers and other people who know a lot about public schools) might be able to more effectively engage him on the issue.... to put it as diplomatically as I possibly can.

(2,331 posts)I too went to a school affiliated with a college although it was public. Highly selective though. Elena Kagan was a classmate. But if my alternative was a dangerous and underperforming public school for my kids like the ones on the south side of Chicago tend to be, I might opt for private school too. That said, I wish he'd get rid of Arne Duncan.

(14,498 posts)One brother was a SS teacher at famed Bx HS of Science and was run outta there ( I do believe) by a fanatic "reform" principal. (Like a lot of folks there.)
Elena's other brother graduated Ivy League and went into working in the NYC Transit system where he was... and maybe still is....very active in the Transit Workers Union.
First brother, by contrast, is not active at all....AFAIK ... in the teachers union. Go figure.
I think all the Kagans went to your HS.... but I'm a little hazy on that.

Of course, good public schools have been trashed by the educational idiots inside and out of the schoolyard, so there it is. Another broken promise, another part of the American Dream for all people trashed for private gains.
