FLORENCE, Ala. —

What's being billed as Alabama's largest solar energy project is opening in northwest Alabama.

The River Bend Solar Energy Center was commissioned in Florence on Friday. It has more than 300,000 solar panels that follow the sun each day to maximize energy production.

Combined, officials say the panels can provide enough power to run more than 15,000 homes.

Electricity from the array will go to Tennessee Valley Authority customers under a 20-year deal between the federal utility and developer NextEra Energy Resources.
