One-Third Of Deaths In China Related To Toxic Smog - Bigger Hazard Than Cigarettes

Smog is related to nearly one third of deaths in China, making it a bigger threat to health than smoking, according to an academic paper published in an international journal based on the study of air pollution and mortality data in 74 Chinese cities.

The findings by Nanjing University’s School of the Environment, which were published in the November edition of the journal the Science of the Total Environment, provides the latest scientific estimates of the health cost of China’s notorious smog.

The latest bout of smog began last Friday, affecting about half a billion people on the mainland, with the severest impact in the last three days.

Previous research work have found equally alarming results about China’s toxic air. The International Energy Agency published its first study on air pollution in June and estimated that severe air pollution has shortened life expectancy in China by an average 25 months.
