Do You Support or Oppose Selling Off National Public Lands?
Rallies across the American West have been held to defend public lands from state takeover, and there is solid evidence that the majority of Westerners want their federal lands to stay that way.
A new poll from Public Policy Polling adds weight to this opinion. Taken in Paul Ryan’s district in southern Wisconsin, the poll shows 73 percent of respondents oppose selling off national public lands, like national forests, national monuments, and wildlife refuges. (The exact question: “Some in Congress have proposed selling off national public lands, like national forests, national monuments, and wildlife refuges. Do you support or oppose this proposal?"
Ryan’s district breaks fairly evenly between Republicans, Democrats, and Independents and is seen by many as a good representation of the country as a whole.
Furthermore, 60 percent oppose Trump’s ordering of the EPA to ditch clean water rules. And, taken on the eve of Trump’s slimming budget plan, which proposes a significant cut to, among other agencies, the Department of Interior’s budget, the poll shows that 55 percent of takers oppose the cuts. (Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke has vowed to fight the cuts.)
“That some of our elected officials would continue to pursue this fool’s errand does not reflect the will of the people,” says Land Tawney, President and CEO of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, a nonprofit that advocates for public lands. But do you agree? Take our poll below.
