Related: About this forumWaPo: Major Trump administration climate report says damages are 'intensifying across the country'
"The federal government on Friday released a long-awaited report with an unmistakable message: The effects of climate change, including deadly wildfires, increasingly debilitating hurricanes and heat waves, are already battering the United States, and the danger of more such catastrophes is worsening."
[snip]
"The report finds that the continental United States already is 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than it was 100 years ago, surrounded by seas that are on average nine inches higher and being racked by far worse heat waves than the nation experienced only 50 years ago.
But those figures offer only the prelude to even more potentially severe impacts. The report suggests that by 2050, the country could see as much as 2.3 additional degrees of warming in the continental United States. By that same year, in a high-end global-warming scenario, coral reefs in Hawaii and the U.S. Pacific territories could be bleaching every single year conditions in which their survival would be in severe doubt. A record-warm year like 2016 would become routine.
Key crops, including corn, wheat and soybeans, would see declining yields as temperatures rise during the growing season. The city of Phoenix, which experienced about 80 days per year over 100 degrees around the turn of the century, could see between 120 and 150 such days per year by the end of the century, depending on the pace of emissions."

(26,219 posts)It isn't just the warming, but the warming will cause the most severe damage.
The issue is getting people to see it. The topic falls flat no matter how they try to present it. No idea what it will take to wake people up to the danger staring us in the face.

(7,367 posts)As soon as I see "2100" I stop reading. It's happening now, and its going to get exponentially worse each year. Climate Scientists are either afraid of losing their grants or do not want to risk sounding too alarmist. There are people dying NOW.

(8,201 posts)I had a maximum of four paragraphs to excerpt because of copy right law, but if you read the article, I think you'll agree that this report is not too conservative.

(7,367 posts)It's very good if one doesn't rely on news reports (as I initially did)
Thanks for posting it.

(8,201 posts)Even now, NYT is saying GDP might fall 10% by 2100, like that's the big problem with climate change. As opposed to, oh I don't know, loss of ecosystems, killer heat waves and storms, whole nations flooded out of existence, mass extinctions.

(9,715 posts)Until the world gets on the same page and stops carbon emissions, were screwed. I believe we have already passed the tipping point. Life including humans may survive the initial onslaught of problems, drought, famine, wars, but that life may be unrecognizably altered to adapt to the changing conditions.

And girls, too, since there are a lot of women scientists, did you know that? Lots of women scientists. No collusion!"
