NJ Rejoins Regional Climate Pact Christie Dumped Back In 2012

Gov. Phil Murphy’s administration on Monday announced a formal plan to put New Jersey back into a regional pact to fight climate change — a move that’s expected to cost the state’s ratepayers an extra dollar a month.

In 2012, then-Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, pulled the Garden State out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a multi-state cap-and-trade agreement to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power plants. Christie dismissed the pact as “gimmicky” and said it amounted to a tax on residents.

But shortly after being sworn in as Christie’s replacement, Murphy, a Democrat, announced in January that New Jersey would rejoin the agreement, casually known as RGGI — pronounced “reggie."

Murphy said the move was needed to help protect the state from the effects of global warming and rising sea levels, especially in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and with Republican President Donald Trump in the White House.
